Lake trout ("lakers") and rainbow trout spice up the Door
County fishing scene and offer a wide variety of angling experiences. Lakers
are denizens of the deep water, the sumo wrestlers of Lake Michigan, big,
fat, and aggressive. They kick off the action on the big lake in May and
can be caught throughout the summer. A good laker can weigh over 20 pounds
and these trout are the species used in the famed Door County fish boils.
Ranbows ride in suspended schools hanging just below the warmer surface
water. They'll gorge on insects floating in the surface film and smash spoons
and flies trolled high on flat lines. Then the race is on! One battle with
a big 'bow can spoil you for life. This fish will likely clear the surface
with numerous acrobatic leaps, scream line off your level-wind and then
barrel full-bore for the boat. If you land 50 percent of the hook-ups with
rainbows, you're having a good day! |
